Classical Music Appreciation

     On Friday, June 2nd, I accompanied Chuo Secondary School staff and students to see a musical performance by the Gunma Symphony Orchestra at Shoken Gakuen Maebashi Hall. The concert was divided into two parts: The first half being Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet (Fantasy Overture), followed by Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104.

　6月2日の金曜日、私は中央中学校のスタッフと生徒たちと一緒に、群馬交響楽団の演奏会を前橋市総合文化センター「聖研学園前橋ホール」で見に行きました。コンサートは2つのパートに分かれており、最初のパートはチャイコフスキーの「ロミオとジュリエット」（幻想序曲）、続いてドヴォルザークの「ハ短調チェロ協奏曲」作品104が演奏されました。
     Romeo and Juliet starts off a bit slow, but the piece starts to gradually come together in such a manner that if you closed your eyes, you could almost feel yourself being transported away into another world by the fantastical melody flowing throughout the auditorium. In this piece, you can enjoy hearing the warm sounds of the french horn and oboe, entwined with the enchanting sounds of a harp. An array of violins and other stringed instruments begin to race along with the beating of drums, and you begin to feel the powerful vibrations from the brass and percussion reverberate throughout your body. This pattern continues, and as the music crescendos and the tension builds, it finally reaches its climax, releasing that built-up tension and leaving you with the most iconic and nostalgic part of the composition, conveying a sensation akin to a bird springing into the air and taking its first successful flight.

　「ロミオとジュリエット」は最初は少しゆっくりと始まりますが、次第にピースが組み上がっていきます。もし目を閉じれば、オーディトリウム全体に広がる幻想的なメロディによって、まるで別の世界に運ばれているかのような感覚になるでしょう。この曲では、フレンチホルンやオーボエの暖かな音色が、魅惑的なハープの音と絡み合って楽しむことができます。バイオリンや他の弦楽器の群れがドラムのリズムとともに競い合い、ブラスとパーカッションの力強い振動が体中に広がってくる感じがします。このパターンが続き、音楽が盛り上がり緊張感が高まるにつれて、ついにクライマックスに達し、たまっていた緊張が解放され、作曲の最も象徴的で懐かしい部分に到達します。まるで鳥が空に舞い上がり初めて成功した飛行をするような感覚を伝えます。

   Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor featured an extremely talented cellist by the name of Toba Sakura, who was featured adjacent to the conductor. Her performance was as elegant as the glimmering purple dress which she was wearing, and the manner in which she skillfully and passionately navigated her parts of the piece was considerably impressive, to say the least. She seemed to be in harmony with her instrument, and swayed gracefully back and forth in a manner which almost seemed like she was entirely being animated by the music itself. The graceful melody created by the woodwinds, harp, and string instruments in this piece lent itself to a feeling of the music gently engulfing the auditorium like steam in a sauna, leading to a crescendo finish so triumphant that it sent chills down my spine.

　ドヴォルザークのハ短調チェロ協奏曲には、寄り添って指揮者の横に登場した多賀さくらという非常に才能あるチェリストが特集されていました。彼女の演奏は、彼女が身に着けていた輝く紫のドレスと同様に優雅であり、ピースのパートを巧みかつ情熱的に進行させる彼女の様子は、少なくとも非常に印象的でした。彼女は自分の楽器と調和しているようであり、まるで音楽そのものによって完全に活気づけられているかのように優雅に前後に揺れ動いていました。この曲で木管楽器、ハープ、弦楽器が生み出す優雅なメロディは、まるでサウナの中の蒸気のようにオーディトリウムを優しく包み込む感覚を与え、躍動感に満ちたクレッシェンドのフィニッシュは背筋を震わせるほど壮大でした。
     Personally, I have not had the opportunity to see many live orchestral performances in my life, so I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. The iconic and climatic part from Romeo and Juliet was something that I was already familiar with and had a vague sense of nostalgia towards, but I have never experienced the piece in its entirety before. Cello Concerto in B minor’s overall pace and length definitely contributed to being a slower burn than Romeo and Juliet, but the masterful performance by Toba, and the impressive manner in which the piece brings itself to an end was considerably moving. The overall experience for me was both entertaining and informative, and I look forward to seeing more live performances in the future.

　個人的には、生オーケストラの演奏を多く見る機会がなかったため、この経験をとても楽しんでいました。『ロミオとジュリエット』の象徴的で盛り上がる部分は、以前からなじみがあり、ある種のノスタルジアを感じていましたが、これまで全曲を体験したことはありませんでした。『ハ短調チェロ協奏曲』は全体的なペースと長さが『ロミオとジュリエット』よりもゆっくりとした進行でしたが、多賀さんの巧みな演奏と曲自体が素晴らしい終わりを迎える様子は、非常に感動的でした。全体的な体験は楽しく、情報を得ることができ、将来的にもっと生の演奏を見ることを楽しみにしています。
